😂 HUMOUR
“If you’re going to live, you might as well laugh.” – Sarah Silverman
Humour is the sudden burst of light through the trees—the unexpected breath in the middle of heaviness. In the ADHD terrain, humour isn’t just entertainment. It’s medicine. It’s how we cope, connect, and sometimes survive the chaos of missed cues, misplaced phones, and misunderstood moments.
For many ADHDers, humour is a superpower. We see connections others don’t, notice oddities that spark laughter, and use storytelling to turn pain into punchlines. This isn’t deflection—it’s resilience. It’s alchemy. Humour turns shame into something shareable, turns frustration into community, and creates warmth in a world that too often labels us as “too much.”
But humour isn’t just for others. It’s also how we relate to ourselves. When we can laugh—gently, lovingly—at our quirks, our spirals, our humanity, we take back power from perfectionism. We stop being the problem and start being the protagonist in a very compelling (and occasionally ridiculous) plotline.
This value doesn’t ask us to dismiss the serious. It invites us to hold it all with levity. It’s about making space for laughter without minimizing struggle. In fact, the more we learn to laugh, the more space we make for grace, repair, and healing.
🧭 The HOPE Trail Map
- Helps or Harms: Is this humour helping me connect—or hiding something I’m not ready to face?
- Own My Values: I want to be someone who uses humour to lift, not deflect—to create connection, not escape.
- People and Pursuits: Who makes me laugh with life, not at it? What activities let me feel playful and light?
- Enact and Evaluate: Today, I’ll find one thing to laugh about—especially if it’s something I usually criticise in myself.
⚠️ Trail Challenges
- Humour can become a mask to avoid vulnerability.
- Sarcasm or self-deprecation may deepen shame instead of diffusing it.
- Others may misunderstand neurodivergent humour or spontaneity.
🪧 Trail Markers: Small Steps Toward Humour
- Share a story that’s funny because it was chaotic—not despite it.
- Watch or listen to something that makes you belly-laugh.
- Reframe a recent slip-up with gentleness and a grin.
