Exact GP Referral Wording
$0-238
/291 or 296Please ensure your GP uses the following phrase: “Referred for ADHD assessment, under Medicare item 291 (one-off assessment) or item 296 (ongoing psychiatrist care) as clinically appropriate.” This single phrase allows us to place you into the correct Medicare pathway once your assessment is complete. We believe in keeping high-quality mental health care affordable and transparent. This is why the two-pathway approach exists: 291 protects you from unnecessary cost when ADHD is not diagnosed. 296 provides the required psychiatric framework for safe ADHD treatment and medication management. You pay only for the components that are clinically necessary for your situation.
- ADHD Assessment
- Either 291 OR 296
- As clinically appropriate
291 — One-Off Assessment
$0
/Medicare FundedIf ADHD is not diagnosed, your assessment is completed under Medicare Item 291. This pathway is used when symptoms such as distractibility and disorganization arise from other conditions — such as depression, anxiety — and ADHD is ruled out. We appreciate that you might have given this a lot of thought and a nonADHD diagnosis may be disappointing. But this is good news as there are effective treatments available. In these cases, a clear management plan is provided for your GP to continue your care. Medicare permits this as a one-off specialist assessment; however, ongoing psychiatric follow-up cannot occur under this item. The benefit is that you do not pay the $500 fee, and Medicare covers the cost in full.
- No out-of-pocket
- GP continues care
- Clear management plan
296 — Ongoing Psychiatrist Care
$238
/Out of PocketIf ADHD is diagnosed, Medicare requires the use of Item 296 for ongoing psychiatric care. This involves an initial out-of-pocket expense of approximately $237.90 (initial appointment $500 minus ~$262.10 rebate). ADHD treatment involves Schedule 8 medications and regulated ongoing monitoring, thus your ongoing care cannot be provided uner a 291 one off assessment. Additional costs apply only if ADHD is confirmed, e.g. collateral information gathering ($125) and the baseline annual inventory ($125) prior to your prescribing appointment. You pay only for what you truly need. Only if ADHD is confirmed, you enter a regulated, high-quality, affordable pathway with clear ongoing specialist support.
- Assessment Out of Pocket = $238
- Collateral Collation = $125
- Baseline Invetory = $125

Mindwood
Mindwood invites readers to explore the ADHD brain as a living forest — not something broken, but something alive, complex, and worth understanding.
Through metaphor, neuroscience, and lived experience, the book reveals how attention, emotion, motivation, and creativity grow from the same terrain that can also hold challenge. Story and science walk side by side, opening into practical tools for learning, relationships, work, and daily life.
Written for adults with ADHD, families, educators, and clinicians, Mindwood replaces shame with insight and confusion with clarity.
Not a cure. A map — and a kinder way forward.

Myth Busting 101
Adult ADHD: Myth Busting 101 dismantles the misconceptions that shape how ADHD is judged, treated, and lived with in adulthood.
Working myth by myth, the book replaces stereotypes and blame with evidence, understanding, and compassion. Across nine themed sections — from diagnosis and medication to work, relationships, and strengths — it helps readers recognise patterns rather than personalise struggle.
Written by a psychiatrist–therapist team specialising in adult ADHD, this is a guide for adults with ADHD, those who love them, and the professionals who support them.
Not about lowering standards. About raising understanding — and rewriting the story.
